PetSmart, the place for healthier, happier pets, is headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona.  They also manage their PetSmart Charities from Phoenix.  Its the hub for an international company, serving pets and their owners. The company, though primarily seen as a retail pet supply store, is so much more. They offer grooming, boarding, daycare and training.  They also offer adoption services for pets and small household animals. PetSmart is the owner of PetsHotel, a place for pets with supervision and interaction with other pets, for dogs and cats, overnight and daycare.  It’s a company bigger than the retail store we’re used to seeing.

PetSmart originates back to 1986, under the name Petfood Warehouse. Jim and Janice Doughtrey open their first two stores under this name in 1987 in Arizona.  They believed in the idea of a pet food superstore.  In the next year, seven stores have opened under the chain name and the company already begins its charity of working with local animal welfare organizations and being involved in pet adoption clinics. Over the years, the name changes to PetSmart, many more stores open across the country, they become a publicly traded company, selling shares on the stock market, open veterinary clinics, offer a permanent in-store adoption clinic and move to birds, reptiles and other small animals.

The next decade brings the international growth the company sees.  PetSmart Charities forms independently to focus on the homeless pet population.  Over 1000 new stores are opened along with PetsHotel.  This change moves the store from the “mart” and into the “Smart.”  They want to offer full service for pets, not just shopping and adoption needs.

PetSmart Charities

PetSmart Charities works with local adoption organizations and donates to over 3,400 organizations.  They are most known for their Rescue Waggin’ program.  This program moves dogs from over populated areas to less populated areas, increasing the chance of adoption.

2002, PetSmart purchases PETsHOTELs from David Macksteller and Rodger Ford.  They began thie idea in Arizona of boarding for pets in a more caring, humane way. The hotel offers day boarding for dogs and cats as well as overnight boarding.  They offer play and socialization for their guests.

PetSmart is the company it was created to be, much bigger than probably imagined, but all encompassing as it should be.  A partnership with Banfield Animal Hospital, a doggie daycare, full service dog grooming, full adoption centers located onsite by pet welfare organizations, and producing its own line of pet food gives it the feel of its purpose.  PetSmart believes pets make us better people.  They sell that idea every day. They invest their own profits into animals and ask their customers to do the same through multiple giving avenues.  They’ve survived PETA accusations but not directed to them but their suppliers. PetSmart continues to grow in size and in ability but they keep working and investing in their Phoenix community, right where they started. This post about the PetSmart Corporation is brought to you by Mesa Towing Pros. If you need a tow in the Phoenix metro area and are looking for a “tow truck near me“, give them a call! They offer affordable rates and extremely quick response times.

If pets make us better people, then PetSmart is good people.

Cold Stone Creamery

Like it.  Love it.  Gotta have it.  Cold Stone seeks to find the middle ground, offering quality ice cream, neither hard or soft serve ice cream.  Headquartered in Scottsdale, this Arizona company didn’t start there.  They grew into it.  The first creamery opened in 1988 in Tempe, Arizona.  Two years later, the second creamery opened in Phoenix.  This is just the beginning for the company who would become a franchise, sing to its customers, and create their own original recipes.  It’s corporate offices are now in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Donald and Susan Sutherland wanted ice cream that wasn’t hard-packed nor soft-serve.  They wanted something smooth.  They decided to open their own store, selling creamy, super premium ice cream in Tempe, Arizona. The store modeled itself after Steve Herrell’s business model from Steve’s Ice Cream.  Customers chose their ice cream flavor and then choice from a large variety of mix ins.  This included candy, nuts, syrup, fruit, and brownies.  The mix-ins were folded into the ice cream on a frozen stone slab, hence the name.

They introduced their “originals” recipes for ice cream, milkshakes, cakes and sandwiches.

In 1995, the first franchise store was opened in Tucson, across University of Arizona.  By 2001, there were 225 stores nationwide.  There has been franchise controversy, one the New York Times covered in detail.  Franchisees claim to many too fast have hurt sales, forcing many out of business from falling profits.

Cold Stone Today

Today, the company has over more than 900 independently owned stores in 47 states.  The ice cream is handcrafted daily.  Customers order from a menu or make their own “creation” from flavors and mix ins.  Flavors change and samples are encouraged.  Crew members entertain tipping guests with a quirky song, putting a smile on everyone’s face. Current headquarters include a classroom, a development kitchen and a training store.  They have partnered with Jell-O and Jelly Belly for flavoring. They have been featured as a video game, Cold Stone Creamery, Scoop It Up, for the Nintendo Wii.

ColdStone has many partnerships or affiliations.  They partner with Canada’s coffee chain, Tim Hortons.  This partnership allows ColdStone into Canada and Tim Hortin’s into the United States. This partnership also allowed for a dual store to be opened up in New York’s famous Times Square.  Another partnership with Soup Kitchen International and Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory gave them company an even larger national presence. Rocky Mountain saw an immediate increase in sales after the co-branding.

ColdStone is the sixth largest brand of ice cream and has stores worldwide. They have added online cake ordering to their norm, finding most people preorder at night, when life settles down.

They are currently looking into expanding into a bakery and coffee shop. This allows them a competitive edge with competitors during the colder months, particularly in the colder states.  They will be continuing to add more flavors, more cakes, and create a member card for in-store rewards. Best Western International

Best Western Motels began in 1946 by M.K. Guertin.  He believed in the importance of advertising travel accommodations to the general public.  This was an innovative approach to lodging and began a change in the industry.  In 1963, they are the largest motel chain with 699 properties.  In 1966, Best Western moves it’s national headquarters to Phoenix, Arizona. This allowed room for growth in their member services by consolidating operations. Today, still headquartered in Arizona, they have over 2,200 hotels just in North America.  This company born from an idea of a visionary, has a strong global presence.

Early History

After World War II, travelers were forced to stay in large urban properties or smaller, family owned hotels off the side of the road.  Travelers had to find a place to stay at each stop.  There were no reservations, no knowing if anything was available or where the next stop could be.  Guertin, part of a network of hotel owners, began to make referrals to other owners to travelers.  The idea grew and grew until he decided to formally create a member chain of hotels.  In 1962, he created the Best Western crown logo to advertiste participating member hotels. These properties covered the entire U.S., making it possible now to reserve travel accommodations across all 50 states.  1964 proves to be a very large milestone in Best Western history. The motels east of the Mississippi incorporate into Best Western, Inc, still headquartered out of Phoenix.  They also expand into Canada with partner hotels. The hotels east of the Mississippi called themselves Best Eastern.  This lasted only a few years when Best Western absorbed those hotels into their corporation.  In the 1970’s, Best Western claimed to be the “World’s largest Lodging Chain.” The were officially in Mexico, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Central America.

Growth required a larger headquarters.  They built a multi-million dollar complex in northeast Phoenix, calling it Best Western International Headquarters. By the end of 1979, they pass another milestone, accommodating over 15 million guests and generating $1 billion in lodging sales. An affiliation with Homestead Motor Inns of Australia allow the company to add International to their name.  They become Best Western International.

In 1985, the North Dakota courts challenged Best Western, forcing them into a franchisor role instead of cooperative membership association. They introduce their Gold Crown Club membership for its frequent travelers.  They had 200,000 members in their first year.

Keeping true to the spirit of Best Western, the chain finds it leading again in innovation by launching the industry’s largest High-Speed Internet Access.  This allowed wireless or hard-wired HSIA in public areas and in some rooms throughout North America. They partner with NASCAR, AAA and Harley Davidson. A focus on customer satisfaction is implemented with online surveys, again the first in the industry to take this step.

Best Western Today

Today, Best Western has a large global presence.  They have two multilingual reservation center, one in Italy and the other in Phoenix.  The hotels are franchises, following the business model of the corporation. Each franchise must follow the standard set by Best Western.  Best Western provides the reservations and brand identity services for all franchisees.
